Gonul Tol is the Director for the Center for Turkish Studies at the Middle East Institute in Washington. Her remarks below shows that she is not capable of capturing what truly is happening in Turkey.

Turkey is an important country for the future of the Middle East not because of its role as regional mediator. The current Lebanese crisis is the most recent example of the limitations of Turkey’s mediation efforts in the region. Rather, Turkey is important because it represents the manifestation of the very same post-ideological condition that gave birth to the recent uprisings in the Middle East. The failure of two competing ideologies - Kemalism and Islamism - to deliver on their promises led to a new era in Turkish politics. Kemalism, the founding ideology of the Turkish Republic, has lost its monopoly over modernization. Kurds, Alawites, non-Muslims, and all those who have been excluded from the Kemalist project have pushed for a new, modern discourse that tolerates the articulation of different identities in public sphere. Political participation is not confined to those who subscribe to Kemalist ideology anymore. Turkey is in a post-ideological era where Islam and secularism co-exist, each subconsciously influencing and transforming the other. It has produced its own modernity and represents an alternative democratization path that is organically linked to local culture and yet in dialogue with global norms and ideas. The process that is just starting in the rest of the Middle East has been proceeding in Turkey for some time.

There is some truth in her articulation but the root cause is not related to the shotcomings in Kemalist ideology, it is our collective failure, the lack of indoctrinating Kemalist revolutions into the inner steps of Anatolia and poor villages of Eastern provinces since the death of Kemal Ataturk in 1938.

On all other accounts, her remarks are utterly and factually wrong. Alawites, non-muslims, Jews, Armenians, Kurds in exclusion of those who live in Eastern provinces have never been excluded, just on the contrary, those are the groups who are staunch defenders of Kemalist principles. AKP's leadership has been slowly transforming the country to a regime that has no tolerance to opposition. They were successful in their fear politics in silencing anyone who they deem to be an obstacle in reaching the goal of converting Ataturk's secular Turkey to Abdulhamit's Ottoman times where media censorship and jailing without evidence was a usual daily matter. Today, US has condemned Iran for the arrests of newscasters, journalists, intellectuals, anyone against Islamic Republic's voice. Well, the situation in Turkey is absolutely no different than Iran, and if you are advocating Turkey to be a democratic model for any country, it is a a laughable matter and a travesty at best. I am sure it sounds perfect for the clueless ears in Washington that are eager to jump into the band wagon to show a model in Islamic Middle East to troubled countries for an easy way out in their think-pink-tank foreign politics. It is a shame to see what she has become of, someone who they ask to get her opinion in Middle East affairs that either she is no expert of or someone who gets a pay-check regularly from Erdogan's AKP party or its supporters here in US.

Bu yanıtı en iyi verebilecek ve gereğini hayata geçirecek kişi sizsiniz. Size asla “akıl öğretmek” gibi bir niyet taşımadan, lakin sade “bir ferd-i millet”, bir “Cumhuriyet Türkü” olarak kendi önerimi de sizinle paylaşmamın öncelikle “Yaşasın Türkiye” diyen bir yurttaş olarak görevim olduğuna inanıyorum. Çünkü bugün yüz yüze olduğunuz sorun T.S.K.’nin “kurumsal” bir sorunu olmanın çok çok ötesindedir. Doğrudan doğruya Atatürkçü, laik Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’ni başkalaştırmanın, giderek ortadan kaldırmanın ve yerine “Büyük Orta Doğu Projesi”nin öngördüğü tarzda ılımlı dinci, ümmetçi bir “ucube” dikmeninin amaçlandığı hainane bir örtülü savaşta orduya yönelik yeni bir hücumdur. Elbetteki bu niteliğinden ötürü vatanını seven her Türk yurttaşını ilgilendirir.

Sayın Genelkurmay Başkanı,

Bu hücumu Başvekil’le konuşarak, Başvekil’le pazarlık ederek savuşturamazsınız. Bir iki üst rütbeli silah arkadaşınız için ayrıcalıklı davranış talebinde bulunarak ve hattâ belki de elde ederek durumu kurtarmış olamazsınız.

Başvekil’le başbaşa görüşerek ne olursa ne olur bir bir anlatmanın, Türkiye’nin başına örülmek istenen çorabın çok iyi bilincinde olduğunuzu muhatabınıza dört yaşında bir çocuğun bile anlayabileceği açıklıkla anlatmanın da günü geçti. Sizden önceki Genelkurmay Başkanı ne yazık ki bunu yapmayı beceremedi. Zaten biraz da onun için şimdi siz çok daha ağır hücumları göğüslemek durumundasınız. Mevzi kaybettikçe karşınızdakiler insafa gelmeyeceklerdir; tersine daha büyük bir hırs ve cüretle üstünüze yürümeye devam edeceklerdir – sizi yâni Türk silahlı Kuvvetleri’ni kendilerinin kurşun askeri haline dönüştürene, kurumsal ve moral genlerinizi bozana, kendilerine benzetene dek. Aslında yapacağınız, yapmanız gereken şey çok basittir:

Askerî darbeye; muhtıra yayınlamaya filan gerek yok. Çıkın, Genelkurmay’da iç ve dış tüm medyaya “hukuk” adına sergilenen tüm rezaleti olanca açıklığıyla anlatın. Sahtekârlığı her yanıyla sergileyin. Haklılığın, doğruluğun gücüyle konuşun. Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri’nin şanlı ağırlığıyla konuşun. “Görülmekte olan davayı etkileme” palavrasına kanmadan konuşun. Ortada hukuk mu kaldı? Ortada adil bir yargılama mı var?

Bu hususları tek tek ve kanıtlarıyla anlatın yeter. BOP filan gibi siyasal konulara girmenize de gerek yok. O sivillerin işi. Siz sadece Türk silahlı Kuvvetleri’ni koruyun yeter. Hakemliği, yargıyı Türk Ulusuna bırakın.

Son gunlerde CHP baskan yardimcisi Suheyl Batum'un ordunun ust kademesi icin sarfettigi "Kagittan Kaplan" konusmasi bir cok kesimi rahatsiz etmise benziyor.

Simdi gelin bir sirket tasavvur edelim birlikte ve varsayalim ki o sirketin elemanlari iftiraya ugruyor, sucsuz yere hapsediliyor ve aleni bir sekilde duzmece kanitlari yapanlar hakkinda hic bir hukuki islem yapilmiyor. Bir de ustune ustluk halen calisanlar dahil bu sirketin 160 kusur elemani kacma riski, ve olmayan kanitlari etkilemeleri varsayimiyla tutuklaniyor. Bu sirketin patronu sus pus, elemanlarina arka cikabilecek bir tutum sergilemiyor. Bu sirket tum piyasayi kesinlikle alasagi edebilecek borsa baskani seciminde de caydiricilik gorevini tamamen unutuyor. Piyasa batiyor. Sirket TSK, piyasa laik Turkiye. Turkiyemizin karsi karsiya kaldigi su kritik durum, ulkenin cahilce verilmis oylarina ragmen, o cok zorluklarla kazanilmis Osmanli'dan modern ve batili bir yapiya donusme kazanimlarimizin erozyona ugramasina musaade etmeme gorevini yine TSK'ye yuklemistir. Bunu gorememek, bu misyonun ruhunu anlamamis olmak, iste budur Batum'un kastedigi, yoksa sehitlerimiz ve vatani icin canini vermekten zerre kadar cekinmeyen Turk ordusu "kagittan kaplan" taniminin disindadir zaten. En ust komuta kademesi TSK'nin kutsal misyonunu gozardi etmis ve dincilerin TSK'yi dusurdugu duruma kayitsiz kalmistir. Bunu boyle gormek lazim, Turk ordusunun en ust kademesi icin soylenmis bir sozdur, geneli kesinlikle kastedilmemistir.

Free speech, democracy etc...

The excellency, Mr. Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey, filed a criminal complaint against another blogger with the claims of attacks to his personality with heavy insults. The charge is beyond travesty. Though it should not surprise anyone who is aware of business in Turkey these days. Attorney-generalship prosecutor O. Atalay, acted upon this legal complaint and indicted the 22 year old university student blogger for two years in prison. The poor blogger testified that he has not used any wording that would denigrate or attack Erdogan's personality. Indeed he said he used exactly the same phrase that Mr. Erdogan had uttered at one of his public speeches recently.

What did Mr. Erdogan say: "CHP and MHP (two other opposition parties) became soul-mates with Ocalan (PKK's leader in prision)". Lets see what 22 year old student said: "Just on the contrary, let me remind you that state and PKK's leader Ocalan had been in close contact recently, Erdogan is indeed a true soul-mate with Ocalan."

Wait, this is indeed nothing compared to the scores of intellectuals, writers, academicians, army officers held in prison for more than two years without a credible evidence against them on charges of organizing a coup attempt to topple government 10 years ago, namely, "Ergenekon" and "Balyoz" trials. They have not been proven guilty and so far all the hard evidence put forward by the police department is proven to be manufactured. Similar to this, a journalists from one of the many pro-government newspapers dumped a suitcase full of CDs and papers on a police station, which then found to be all created after the date of indictments upon criminal investigation. None of this is pursued by the Attorney-prosecutors who are indeed instantiated by the interior ministry that obviously belong to AKP. Yet the innocent victims of these false accusations are still held in prison, for more than two years. In Turkey, a person is guilty of charge until proving not guilty. Shouldn't this be the other way around in democracies.

This is the government of AKP, and its leader Mr. Erdogan praised by West on the accounts of progress in democracy and civil rights. (!)
